Selenite, Banockburn (Crystal)

Price range: $3.00 through $10.00

These natural selenite pieces are a crystal variety of gypsum. About 10 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, Central Otago was covered by a massive ancient inland lake complex, known as the Bannockburn Formation. As sections of this prehistoric lake system dried up and evaporated under arid conditions, dissolved calcium and sulphate concentrated in the muddy lake beds. The chemical process formed gypsum salts inside the iron-rich mudstone and clay layers. Over time, these grew into the distinct crystalline clusters known as selenite.

Please note that some of these are very fragile, particularly the smaller pieces. We will do our best to send them out well packed, but they may have pieces break off during shipping.
