$5.00$28.00

Schalenblende is a compact, fine-grained mixture of sulfides, dominated by sphalerite of a mid-brown to yellow or cream colour, occurring in concentric layers. Galena is the mineral in schalenblende that gives it it’s weight. It is estimated that Schalenblende formed around 135 million years ago, when a sulfide rich liquid rapidly crystallised at an unusually low temperature. This process was very rare, making the mineral itself very rare. Schalenblende was first discovered in 1892 by J.D. Dana. He named it after the German words Schale (to cover) and Blende (to hide) This refers to the number of different minerals within Schalenblende that are hidden throughout it’s concentric layers.
