Cave Bear Tooth (2)

$155.00

The European Cave Bear (Ursus spelaeus) was one of the best known mammals of the Ice Age. It had a heavily built body with a large head, domed skull, steep forehead, and small eyes. The build of its body was similar to that of a grizzly bear, but despite it’s terrifying size, the Cave Bear subsisted mostly on a plant based diet – inferred by the wear patterns on its fossilized teeth.

Prior to paleontological understandings, many of these fossils were found in caves and misinterpreted as the remains of dragons or other legendary beasts, inspiring folklore and cave names after mythical creatures.

These teeth are very difficult to source now – quite a treasure!
