Ammonite Pair, Pyritised (Fossil)

Price range: $12.00 through $15.00

Ammonites are sea creatures that belong to a group known as the cephalopods. Their closest living relatives are squid, octopus, and nautilus. They lived, and became extinct, at the same time as the dinosaurs, 240-65 million years ago.
These particular ammonites have, over many years, pyritised. This comes about when the natural calcium carbonate, that makes up the shell, is replaced by suphites, when in sulphide-rich sediments.
The name Ammonite originates from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon.
