Ammonite Pair (1) The name Ammonite originates from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon. Ammonites were predatory marine mollusks and cephalopods, closely related to modern day squid and octopus. The visible spiral consists of individual chambers separated by walls called septa. These chambers were used to control buoyancy by adjusting gas and fluid levels. These chambers are often mineralised with calcite crystals.
