Ammonite, Calcified (1) (Fossil)

This is an interesting specimen as Calcite has replaced the outer layer of Aragonite, the mineral making up the shell of the Ammonite, leaving the original shape. The sedimentary matrix has been shaped so that the whole piece can stand alone as a specimen.This shows the ‘positive’ side at the front while on the back it is the ‘negative’ of this fossil plus a smaller one.

Country of Origin: Lyme Regis, UK
Size: The ammonite is 25mm x 17mm on the front, and  30mm x 30mm on the back, while the whole piece is 53mm x 40mm
Species: Most likely to be Promicroceras
Age: Lower Jurassic
